Maya Domesticated Animals

Yaxche Maya Restaurant Playa del Carmen, MexicoTurkeys and peccary (also called javelina) were domesticated for food, but the Maya are famous for raising dogs which were fed a vegetarian diet to fatten them up for the table. There were several different breeds of these dogs, including a hairless and a barkless version.

Although you don't see Maya eating dog these days, Maya farmers continue the practice of raising bees in hollowed out logs for honey. You can buy this honey all around the Yucatan, but a popular place to buy it is on the main highway near Chichen Itza.
