Maya Hunting and Fishing

Yaxche garden restaurant Playa del Carmen, MexicoAlmost all the animals in the Yucatan were hunted by the Maya. Depending on the climate and region, game animals included deer, turkey, duck, armadillo, peccary, quail, tapir, monkeys, tapirs, and iguana. Tapir and jaguar were hunted for their pelts; tapir hide was used as armor. Ancient Maya used bow and arrows, spears, blowguns, darts and snares to kill animals. Sometimes they hunted with domesticated dogs called acehpek.

Since there are few rivers in the Yucatan, fishing was generally in salt water. Maya used nets and hook and line to catch fish. Maya also ate oysters, turtles and sea birds when available.
