Yaxche Sacred Tree

playa del carmen restaurant mayanThe poem on the front page is about Yaxche, the sacred tree. It is dedicated to the restaurant owner's grandfather, whose interest in the Maya inspired his grandson to promote Maya cuisine.

"Yaxche" literally means "green tree" in Mayan, but spiritually it represents the "sacred tree" or ceba. "Yaxche" also represents paradise or heaven. To the Maya, the sacred ceba tree connects the three layers of the world. The roots reach into the underworld of death, the trunk is in the middleworld of life, and the branches reach up into the upperworld of paradise.

Yaxche Maya Cuisine Restaurant is also about connections. We wish to introduce the traveler to Mexico to the rich world of the Maya, their culture and their unique delicious food.
